What is expandable graphite used for?
 
One of the main applications of expandable graphite is as a flame retardant. When exposed to heat, expandable graphite expands and forms an intumescent layer on the material surface.
 
What is the difference between graphite and expandable graphite?
 
The graphite that is modified to a structure consisting of layers, with spacing in between each layer is called expanded graphite. This modified structure of Graphite has electrical and thermal conductivity 150 time better than the original graphite.
 
Why can expandable graphite be expanded?
 
The expandable graphite expands under the impact of heat up to 600 times of its original volume and creates a very large surface area. It allows a quick oxidation of the carbon. The oxygen is taken out of the air by oxidation and makes the air almost inert.
 
How do you make expanded graphite?
 
This article reports a new way to prepare expanded graphite using a thermal method. Natural graphite was added to crystalline hydrate of metals with mechanical stirring at room temperature, taken in the number of 20-80% of the mass of mix. This was then placed in muffle furnace.
