2.What is expanded graphite?

 

Expanded graphite is a modified graphite that has a layered structure with interlayer space (Fig. 7.5). The electrical conductivity of this material is graphite, but it can expand to more than 150 times.

 

3.How is expanded graphite made?

 

The graphite flakes are mixed with a highly oxidizing acid to form an intercalation compound which is expanded by applying high temperatures. The resulting expanded graphite worms are mechanically compressed into graphite foil without fillers or binders. Then the foil is ground to expanded graphite powder.
